The Changing of the Guard at La Citadelle in Quebec City is a highlight of any summer visit. The ceremony takes place across the site's parade grounds with the picturesque Chateau Frontenac in the background. It rivals the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace with all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding it–even their mascot the goat gets in on the action! Situated high above the city, even in early July it can be freezing, but a little cold never deters me from a good show. After, the only way to wander the grounds--and take in the site's commanding views of the city--is on a tour. Before leaving the Citadel, also be sure to check out the “I Remember” exhibit and Hall of Medals to pay homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed so much in the name of freedom.
Details: The changing of the Guard takes place daily at 10am from June 24 until the first Monday in September. (With the exception of July 1 and July 3 because of official ceremonies for Canada Day and the Freedom of the City). Arrive at least 15 minutes before the ceremony starts to purchase your ticket. The ceremony lasts approximately 35 minutes and is followed by the tour which lasts 1 hour. (Note: Tours are conducted in French and in English. The Changing of the Guard ceremony may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.) Tours of La Citadel are conducted throughout the day year-round (May-Oct 9am-5pm & Nov-Apr 10am-4pm). Tip: Bring something warm to wear. It can be surprisingly chilly on the open parade grounds.
