Obersalzberg is more well known by Americans as the area immediately surrounding Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. Below the mountaintop chalet lies the miles of underground bunkers Hitler ordered carved out by slave labor. It now serves as the Nazi documentation center, which you can visit while waiting for your bus ride up to the famed vacation home site. On the crisp fall day that we visited, the fog was just lifting off of the mountains, affording us a beautiful view contrasting so much with the bleak bunkers behind that held such a sad story.
